The old estate of Binissaida, a name with clear Arab roots – “Bani Said” (of the sons of Said) – was subject to numerous divisions, generating a number of independent properties that remain linked by name (hence Binissaida de Sa Torre, Binissaida de Davant, Binissaida de Sa Creueta, Binissaida de Ses Barrancones or Sant Joan de Binissaida).
As a consequence of the commercial and maritime economic expansion that Menorca (and especially the city of Mahón) underwent in the 18th century, a new economic class arose – the ascendency – with clearly bourgeois roots. Part of its profits was invested in the purchase of country properties on which manor houses such as Sant Joan de Binissaida were built.
Sant Joan de Binissaida has been subject to many changes over the years. The farm-workers lived on the ground floor, while the owners’ residence was built on the first floor. The second floor attics were used to store wheat and other cereals.
The ground floor of the house is absolutely abandoned, the entrance has been blocked and there is only a small bathroom, located in the eye of the main staircase. The attics were not habitable and it was necessary to redo roofs and roofs. The Ferris wheel had disappeared. There was nothing left of the old wooden rigging, some concrete screeds had been made and the water had dried out. Even so, the pool that feeds on water from another well is conserved. Next to this and the bread oven (which had not been achieved either) two rooms had been raised because they had engines and services that destroyed the beauty of the whole environment, and both the cattle bar and the haystack were in a state of total abandonment. impossible to use Finally, the fields of crops have never been fired and the dry stone walls that surround them have been reduced, which required a deep investment to turn them into mechanizable crop fields.
In relation to the built work, the property, after deciding that he wanted to turn the farm into a charming hotel, commissioned the rehabilitation of the building to the young architect and landscaper Elisabet Quintana Seguí. The house was rebuilt between 1998 and 2002.
In 2000 the wheel was rehabilitated after studying the ethnological elements with which it had been initially built. Today it contains water and works as it did in antiquity. Also, the old bread oven was re-made, which nowadays can be used.
In 2008, most of the house's ground floor was rebuilt, turning it into a great avant-garde restaurant, with a kitchen equipped with the latest technological advances. The Suites on the second floor of Wagner and Strauss were also renovated.
In 2009 L'Envelat was inaugurated, a large covered pergola with a private garden, ideal for organizing events and celebrations in an exceptional setting. The magnificently maintained gardens, the delicate lighting of the spaces and the large terraces make L'Envelat the destination of the most exclusive acts of Menorca.
In 2017 a green filter was created according to the GOB guidelines that reuse the waste water for irrigation of estate.
In 2018, 3 new rooms were built respecting the green areas of the estate: Mahler, Britten and Stravinski. The Verdi Junior Suite was also refurbished into a large room with a single space overlooking the entrance to the Port of Mahón.
